Makatea in the Tuamotu Archipelago is a unique island, an elevated atoll, it has a large reserve of groundwater and a great diversity of flora and fauna. The land is very fertile thanks to the soil rich in natural phosphates. During the first half of the 20th century the ore was mostly extracted and exported. Between a return to the phosphate mining, niche tourism or the continuity of the traditional way of life, what choices should the inhabitants make for the future?
