In 2009 we invited the South African photographer Andrew Tshabangu for a residency programme in the framework of our series Contemporary African Photographers to Nairobi, where he worked with us for about three weeks and facilitated a photography workshop.
Together with the Kenyan dancer and photographer James Mweu, the Kenyan artists Kevo Stero and Davis Kabala, they shot pictures of dwellings in Kibera, East Africa's largest slum. Contrary to the stereotypical image often from high above, of opaque masses of houses and people, they instead show closely and in detail the complex livedin world of Kibera.
In 2010 the Goethe-Institut Nairobi held a Carte Blanche with the Picha Festival in Lubumbashi where the project was exhibited for thefirst time. Now we are going to present the works in Nairobi.
