ABOUT US
The iREP 2011, is the maiden edition of the documentary film Festival that is designed as an annual event. The theme for this maiden edition is "Can documentaries provoke change? For Africa the global information order presents a narrative of wars, death, corruption and diseases. Who is telling the story of Africa and its realities and from what perspective? Can African filmmakers bring better understanding within and outside the continent with documentaries that give a more rounded definition of the African experience?

There is a dialogue on-going. Africa is in a conversation with itself concerning the shape of its future. A new order identifying new voices and new leaders, propagating new values of accountability, transparency, fair competition, social justice and economic empowerment is emerging. It is a revolution of immense significance that is bringing a new optimism and pride about our future. Documentary filmmaking can be at the centre of shaping these discourses - guiding and laying bare the issues."

iREP is a touring film festival established by three Nigerian culture figures to promote independent documentary films and global awareness about the role of documentary films in deepening participatory democracy.

Some of its other objectives include creating a platform of awareness and expression for aspiring and practising filmmakers, and providing a forum for people's ingenuity to be showcased without prejudice to style or subject.

Filmmaker and former president, Independent Television Producers Association of Nigeria, Femi Odugbemi; culture journalist and activist, Jahman Anikulapo; and director of The Lagos Film Office, Makin Soyinka, all members of the West African Documentary Film Forum (WADFF) are the initiators of the festival. Young filmmaker and owner of HDQ Studios, Dapo Kolade, will direct this edition of the festival, which is expected to be held in different international locations henceforth.

The maiden edition of the iREPRESENT (iREP) International Documentary Film Festival will hold for four (4) days. With ‘The Impact of Documentary Production in a Developing Society/Economy'as its focus, the four (4) day festival will feature paper presentations, workshops, panel discussions, networking and screenings. There will also be the ceremonial opening and closing ceremonies.

The target audience of the festival includes young and professional filmmakers, screenwriters, producers, film distributors, editors, entertainment lawyers, trade show exhibitors and animators. Others are new media professionals and content creators, and national/state film organisations. The event will afford young filmmakers the opportunity to learn from industry veterans and build connections across the spectrum of creativity. Several of such veterans, specialists in different vital areas of documentary filmmaking will conduct workshops and clinics during the festival. Some of the topics they will examine are ‘The Danger of a Single Story'; ‘The Power of Documentary as a Creative Format' and ‘Digital Filmmaking, Shooting Techniques and Tricks for Documentary Production'.

A rich collection of award-winning documentary films by renowned filmmakers from across the world, especially Africans in the Diaspora and at home complemented by works of young and old filmmakers in Nigeria will be screened during the four day course of the iREP.

The iREPRESENT (iREP) International Documentary Film Festival holds in Lagos from January 20th to 23rd 2011 at Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos and Freedom Park, Broad street, Lagos.
