Bill Kouélany deals with the current political situation in her country. Her work at the Documenta 12 - a huge wall - looks at the recent civil war and ties in with an installation created especially for our gallery. For the individual examination of the consequences of war and violent tendencies she uses different techniques: sewing, gluing, drawing, painting, making collages with press cuttings and monitors showing her own films. One material appears again and again - matt handmade paper. Whatever she uses it for, as bricks to build walls or to create bodies, it always emphasizes the fragility of the depicted object. Bill Kouélany was born in 1965 in Brazzaville. She lives and works there as a writer, stage designer and artist.
