Media independence for Africa!
This theme is relevant in 2012 because issues of good governance, transparency and accountability are currently a hot topic in Africa in relation to governments. The media - through the new, strong use of social media - are also being called to account on issues of their independence.
Sub-themes:
- Media independence: financial sustainability, management of political influence, self-regulation.
- Positioning African media on the international scene: African media to play a bigger role in shaping international opinion on Africa.
I. Program :
The format of this high-level dialogue will be mix of keynote addresses, plenary sessions and breakaway sessions. The event will last for three days.
On the next day, a debate on the topic; "Imaging Africa: roles and responsibilities of political leaders and editors in positioning African Media Globally" will be hosted and the key speakers will involve the invited African Heads of State, and Chief among them being H.E the President of the Republic of Rwanda.
An excursion to Kigali Genocide Memorial site, a tour around Kigali City and visits to development projects (cooperatives, one cow per poor family, Mutuelle de santé) will be the closing activity of the three days event.
II. Partipants :
In partnership, National Media Dialogue and the African Editors Forum, the event targets around 250 participants and these include:
- Senior Government officials;
- A representative of the Chair of the African Union Commission;
- Rwanda key guests: Members of the Legislature, Public Institutions, Development Partners, Foreign Missions in Rwanda, Academics, Media Owners, Civil Society Organisations and Private Institutions;
- A representative of the AU Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information;
- Invited foreign participants to the 4th Annual National Dialogue on Media Development;
- Editors and Media Owners from African Countries and the host country, Rwanda;
- Media Organisations and Media NGOs: AMI, FAJ, SAMDEF, South African Press Ombudsman, Training Station UK and Panos Paris Institute;
- Funders: MTN, UNDP, WAN-IFRA and UNESCO
