Zoey MARTINSON is an award winning screenwriter, film director, playwright, stage director and actress (introducing herself as "Director | writer | Connoisseur Of the Absurd").

She is known for "The Fisherman" (2024, feature, Director), "La Oposición" (2017, Director), "The Fisherman" (2018, short, Director), "Betty" (2021, Screenwriter), "Uthandiwe Uyatshata" (2019, Director), RESTLESS CITY (2010, Actress, as Minnie), "Olityelwe" (Stage Director), "Skype Duet" (Stage Director), "The Black History Museum… According to the United States of America" (Stage Director).



Her work focus's on nuanced stories from the Diaspora. Born on the Menominee Nation USA, while living in Africa, London and the USA has given her work a unique lens into the stories she tells. Her theater company Smoke & Mirrors Collaborative creates work around social justice themes and has toured internationally. Her short film "La Oposición" won the Grand Jury Prize at The March on Washington Film Festival, Special Jury Award at Souq Film Festival in Milan and Casa Mexico Program SXSW 2019 distributed by Aspire TV. "The Fisherman", shot in Ghana won the Programmer's Award Short Narrative at the PAFF 2019, finalist HBO Shorts at ABFF, Cinquest, Brussels Short Film Festival, Festival International du Film PanAfricain de Cannes, Official Selection of Diversity in Cannes 2020. "The Fisherman" is streaming on HBO. She is a writer on "Betty" (HBO) and recently directed the TV Movie "Uthandiwe" for South Africa's DSTV MzansiMagic. In theater her play "Olityelwe" won the NYCFringe award for best play and ran off broadway. "Skype Duet" won the 100 Grand award at HAU2 Theater, Berlin then toured internationally. Director/ Creator of immersive Off Broadway show "The Black History Museum… According to the United States of America" that premiered fall 2019 at HERE. Awarded the Rauschenberg Artist as Activist Fellowship, NYC Mayor's Film, TV and Theatre grant, Filmmakers Without Borders grant.
Her work has been nominated for Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, featured on BBC World Service and published in five anthologies. Named one of the 18 Women Making Black History by Popsugar.com BFA SUNY Purchase, MFA NYU TISCH
