After training in several theatre courses, Samir Guesmi made his film debut in 1987 in Olivier Langlois' JAUNE REVOLVER.
After a few small roles, he was noticed for his performance in MALIK LE MAUDIT by Youcef Hamidi, which earned him the Michel Simon prize and the interpretation prize at the 1994 Amiens Festival.
In parallel to his film career, he has made a name for himself in the theatre, notably in the productions of Frédéric Bélier-Garcia (Une nuit arabe by Roland Schimmelpfennig, La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler, Perplexe by Marius von Mayenburg) or in the production of Shakespeare's Othello by Éric Vigner at the Théâtre de l'Odéon.
Without ever leaving the stage, he multiplied his notable appearances in mainstream films (Manuel Boursinhac's LA MENTALE, Pierre Morel's BANLIEUE 13, Guy Jacques' ZE FILM, Guillaume Canet's NE LE DIS À PERSONNE, Florence Canet's LEUR MORALE...
ET LA NÔTRE by Florence Quentin...) as well as in auteur films (BETTY FISHER ET AUTRES HISTOIRES by Claude Miller, L'AFRANCE by Alain Gomis, VIOLENCE DES ÉCHANGES EN MILIEU TEMPÉRÉ by Jean-Marc Moutout, SELON CHARLIE by Nicole Garcia...).
In 2007, Alain Gomis gave him his first major role in ANDALUCÍA.
Nominated for the César for Best Supporting Actor in 2013 with CAMILLE REDOUBLE by Noémie Lvovsky, he continues to collaborate with great authors (Nicole Garcia, Claude Miller, Julie Bertuccelli, Rachid Bouchareb, Bruno Podalydès, Solveig Anspach, Arnaud Desplechin, Alain Gomis, Claire Simon, Michel Leclerc...)

In 2007, Samir Guesmi started directing with C'EST DIMANCHE!
