Mathaba has worked in all spheres of the film industry. He studied at City Varsity Film, Television and Multimedia school in Cape Town and won the Best Student Film Award (1996). In 1998 he began as a trainee AD the feature Storming Ernest, and then AD another feature, For Love of Mummy. Asi produced and directed the 56 minute TV youth show Heita Cape Town for the Western Cape Community Broadcasting Channel.
