Inhalt
Im April 1961 wird eine Gruppe aufsässiger und pazifistischer bretonischer Soldaten im Süden Algeriens während des Militäreinsatzes, der in Frankreich nicht als Krieg, sondern eher als "Aktion zur Aufrechterhaltung der Ordnung" bezeichnet wurde, von einem Offizier übernommen. Dieser bringt die Hitzköpfe dazu, Ausschreitungen und Grausamkeiten zu begehen, die sie selbst zuvor verurteilt hatten. Einer der Soldaten flieht jedoch mit einem gefolterten Gefangenen, um ihn vor einer standrechtlichen Hinrichtung zu retten.


Kommentar (FIFF 2008)
"Fous pas ton pied dans cette merde, c'est une vrai histoire de fous... Pas ton pied dans cette merde, ou bien t'y passeras jusqu'au cou..." Dies singt Yves Branellec zu Beginn des Films, nachdem im Vorspann betont wurde, dass "die Richtigkeit jeder gezeigten Episode von mindestens fünf Zeugen vor Gericht bestätigt werden kann". Damit ist klar: Es handelt sich um einen kämpferischen Film. René Vautier nahm mehr als 800 Stunden Augenzeugenaussagen auf, die er neben seiner persönlichen Erfahrung benutzte, um einen Film zwischen Dokumentation und Fiktion zu schaffen. Mit dem Preis der Internationalen Kritik 1972 in Cannes ausgezeichnet, wurde Avoir vingt ans dans les Aurès von der französischen Kritik verhältnismässig gut aufgenommen. Dennoch musste Vautier in den Hungerstreik treten, um die Vorführungsfreigabe für seinen Film zu erhalten. Noch 1997 versuchte man in Frankreich, das Werk zu verbieten.

Synopsis
In April 1961, during the military engagement termed by France as an "order maintenance operation" rather than a "war", a group of reluctant and pacifist Breton soldiers are taken under the command of an officer in southern Algeria. The officer forces these hotheads to commit all the abuses and cruelty they had formerly condemned. But one of them flees with a tortured prisoner to save him from being executed without a judgement.

"Don't walk on that shit, it's just damn crazy... Not on that shit, or you'll be in it up to your ears..." These words of a song by Yves Branellec underline the first scenes of the film, after the opening titles have indicated that "the veracity of each event related can be confirmed in court by at least five witnesses". The tone is set: this is militant cinema. René Vautier recorded over 800 hours of first-hand accounts which he uses, besides his own personal experience, to make a film that lies somewhere between documentary and fiction. Laureate of the International Critics Award in Cannes in 1972, To Be Twenty in the Aurès was relatively well received by the French critics. The filmmaker still had to go on a hunger strike to avoid censorship and to obtain the film's release permit. In 1997, French right wing politicians were still trying to ban the film.
