At first glance, Sylvain L'Espérance's latest documentary is a terrifying exercise in claustrophobia. An abandoned house in Bamako, Mali, is a makeshift home for a group of penniless refugees trapped in an interminable wait - either for an opportunity to leave, or to obtain legal recognition. Their world seems to be frozen in time, and hope fades as the months pass. Rising to the challenge of their struggle for survival and dignity, three men and a woman find their voice through art. It is a voice that dares to dream, that breaks down walls and annihilates time, and that is, by its very nature, profoundly political. A powerful cri de coeur for every human being, everywhere, who is rejected and negated by our globalizing world.
