This Disney television movie provided Burnett with the opportunity for a deeply felt tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement. The film is admirably simple and direct, and the fine performance by Smollet demonstrates the gift for directing children that is evident in so much of Burnett's work.
