In 1799 the black slaves being transported in a three mast ship captained by the Spaniard, Benito Cereno, rebel. After killing part of the crew, they subdue the captain. The rebel slaves order him to set sail for Africa, but the ship runs into trouble. Delano, the American Captain of a whaler comes to their assistance. Once aboard, everything seems to be in order. The slaves act like slaves. But certain disturbing details soon alert Delano.

En 1799 se rebelan unos esclavos negros transportados en un buque de tres palos al mando del capitán español Benito Cereno. Matan a parte de la tripulación y reducen al capitán. Los esclavos rebeldes le ordenan que les devuelva a las costas de África. El barco tiene dificultades. Delano, el capitán americano de un ballenero, le presta ayuda. Cuando sube a bordo, todo parece en orden. Los esclavos hacen el papel de esclavos. Pero ciertos detalles inquietantes no tardan en alertar a Delano.
