Written by Kelly Dillon, co-directed by Kelly and I, produced by Ant Silverston with the best support and talent supplied by Triggerfish Animation Studios, Belly Flop is a small film about determination and courage. The project began as the winner of an internal story competition at Triggerfish in 2011. I was one of the judges and it was my favourite entry. Kelly developed the story into a short film synopsis and set off on the long, slow journey of making a non-commercial film.
A series of fortunate events in 2015 left Triggerfish with an entire division - visual development, modelling, rigging, texturing and animation - paid up and available for a month. We went all out on preproduction and managed to start animating within 3 weeks. After an 18 month hiatus while Kelly raised additional funding, we continued with production and post in brief gaps throughout 2017, finishing in early 2018.
The film has been selected at more than 50 festivals and has won 7 awards, including Best Animation at The AMA Awards in Rwanda.
