تدور الأحداث في خلال 48 ساعة في القاهرة، اليوم. ليلى هي فتاة في الثانية والثلاثين من العمر، تعمل مذيعة راديو. يتصل الناس ببرنامجها "أسرار الليل" ليكشفوا أعمق أسرارهم. تعيش مع أمها. يوسف هو شاب في الخامسة والثلاثين من العمر، أخصائي في التخدير الطبي. في الصباح، يعمل في مستشفى خاص. وفي الليل، يعمل في عيادة إجهاض غير شرعية. يهوى الاستماع إلى برنامج ليلى الإذاعي. شخصيتان لا يعرفان بعضيهما، وسوف يلتقيان فقط ليدركا حجم الوحدة التي يعيشانها.

Cairo in Winter. Laila is the presenter of a night time radio show called'Night Secrets' during which callers phone in to ask for advice or talk about their experiences. The programme is particularly popular among listeners who take vicarious pleasure in participating in the love lives of others without having to reveal their own.
Youssef is an anaesthetist. He enjoys listening to the things that his anaesthetised patients mumble as they drift off into unconsciousness. Youssef's father has cancer and is near death. During the day, Youssef works in a reputable private clinic. By night, he earns a bit extra in a shady abortion clinic. Laila and Youssef don't know each other. And yet they have their similarities. Both are introverted and hide their true personality behind the secrets of others. In three days' time, Laila and Youssef's paths will cross by chance. This film describes what happens to them prior to this moment. At the same time, the film paints a contemporary portrait of everyday life in the Egyptian capital. The Muslim Brotherhood is winning an increasing number of seats in the Egyptian parliament but, out on the streets, there are demonstrations against state corruption and Mubarak's plan to bequeath his presidential office to his son.
One of the film's most significant locations is the aquarium in the gardens built by Khedive Ismael. Nowadays this is where you'll find schoolchildren playing truant, young lovers, and voyeurs.

Laila trabaja en un programa de radio al que los oyentes llaman y hablan de su vida amorosa. En su tiempo libre, juega al squash, practica natación, lleva a los hijos de su mejor amiga al circo o va a bailar con sus amigos a una discoteca de moda. Youssef es anestesista. Trabaja en un centro privado por la mañana y en una clínica abortista clandestina por la tarde. Oye el programa de Laila. A veces pasa parte de la noche en casa de una mujer a la que tiene cariño. Los dos personajes no se conocen, aunque acabarán por encontrarse. Sus vidas no cambiarán, pero quizá se den cuenta de su soledad.

Kairo im Winter. Laila ist Moderatorin einer nächtlichen Radiosendung, in der unter dem Titel „Geheimnisse der Nacht"Anrufer Rat suchen oder Erlebnisse offenbaren. Beliebt ist diese Sendung vor allem bei Zuhörern, die Anteil am Liebesleben ihrer Mitmenschen nehmen wollen, ohne gleichzeitig ihr eigenes offenbaren zu müssen.
Youssef ist Anästhesist. Er hört gerne dem zu, was seine betäubten Patienten noch so vor sich hinmurmeln, bevor die Wirkung der Narkose richtig einsetzt. Youssefs Vater hat Krebs und wird in Kürze daran sterben. Tagsüber arbeitet Youssef in einer angesehenen Privatklinik, nachts verdient er sich in einer schä bigen Abtreibungsklinik etwas hinzu. Laila und Youssef kennen sich nicht. Doch sie sind sich in manchem ähnlich. Beide sind introvertiert und verbergen ihre eigenen Persönlichkeiten hinter den Geheimnissen anderer Menschen. In drei Tagen werden sich die Wege von Laila und Youssef zufällig kreuzen. Was ihnen bis dahin widerfährt, davon erzählt dieser Film.
Zugleich zeigt er ein aktuelles Bild des alltäglichen Lebens in der ägyptischen Metropole. Die Muslimbruderschaft gewinnt immer mehr Sitze im ägyptischen Parlament, unterdessen kommt es auf den Straßen zu Demonstrationen gegen die staatliche Korruption und den Plan Mubaraks, sein Präsidentenamt seinem Sohn zu vererben.
Zu einem wichtigen Schauplatz des Films wird das Aquarium in den von Vizekönig Ismael Pascha geschaffenen Gärten. Hier trifft man Schüler, die die Schule schwänzen, junge Liebespaare und auch Voyeure.
