The Metropolis Association is launching a new film festival, South Screens (Écrans du Sud), focused on films that are rarely shown and come from underrepresented countries. The first edition, under the theme "Shift," addresses contexts of crisis, injustice, and political upheaval, aiming to explore new perspectives through cinema.
The festival is non-competitive and emphasizes exchange and dialogue. It is a continuation of previous initiatives such as Écrans du Réel, dedicated to documentaries. The ten-day program features more than twenty films from thirty-five countries across four continents, including Arab, African, Asian, and Latin American works.
The opening film, I'm Still Here by Walter Salles (Brazil), tells the story of Eunice Paiva, a woman facing government repression during Brazil's military dictatorship in the 1970s. The film is based on the true story recounted in the autobiography of Marcelo Rubens Paiva.
