Dorphanage is a Nairobi-based spoken word poetry entity that fuses performance poetry with live music from a variety of genres.
The name comes from the lead poet Dorphanage's stage name and the unveiling of a 'new age' to performance poetry.
Dorphanage aims to create poetry that resonates with its audience's emotions on a wider level that encompasses spirituality, love, interactions, marriage, festivities and the various aspects of daily life.
What Dorphanage as a spoken word poet has been able to create is a blend of free verse, flow, hip-hop, word-play and storytelling to explore historical, social, cultural, political and humanitarian issues while at the same time providing a light humorous touch that provides audiences an experience that is both thought provoking and entertaining.
Through his poetry, he has been able to embrace diverse themes from loss, life, love, patriotism, tribalism, domestic violence, neo-colonialism, bureaucracy, conspiracy theories, dictatorship and social ills on the background of mellow acoustics and vocals from an informed position that is exuded through the performances that are nothing short of an experience.
