The 2nd Ife Film Festival

THEME: African Film:'Looking Back and Looking Forward'


The 2nd Ife Film Festival is a historical voyage, showing African films in three different phases: the colonial phase, the indigenization phase and the contemporary phase.

The Festival, with the theme, African Film:'Looking back and Looking Forward', will bring together African film practitioners, academicians, audiences, tourists and others from many countries in Africa. The focus will be on a filmic historical voyage. History is a very important aspect of life. It reminds people of the past and points the way into the future. It is important to see films produced in Africa in the past and compare them with what is being done presently. It is expected that the festival will encourage greater intellectual and creative commitment on the part of practitioners as well as a better production environment provided by the government.     

For each participating country, films that were shot in the three different phases will be shown. This will give an opportunity to see how film art has developed in each country. In many African countries, celluloid films are no longer being produced due to financial difficulties. The festival will make provision for all types of films - celluloid, video, high budget, low budget and no-budget.

The festival will combine keynote lectures, plenary sessions and workshops with screenings of films from different African countries and African filmmakers in the Diaspora.

We invite panel and paper proposals that address the theme and the following sub-themes:

Historical background of the African film
Historical Value of the African film
African film Distribution
Thematic construct of the African Film
The policy environment of the African Film
African Film Genres
Aesthetics of the African Film
African Film, Politics and Ideology
African Film and Literacy

Articles are also welcome on all topics and current issues relating to the African Film.

Financial Support: There is a limited amount of funding available to cover travel expenses for a few participants: priority for this will be given to participants from Africa (outside Nigeria) to enable them attend the conference.
