Family violence has reached what could be called epidemic levels in Papua New Guinea, the South Pacific's largest nation. Two out of three women experience domestic violence and 50% of women have experienced forced sex or gang rape. Faced with this dramatic situation due above all to a deviation in tribal practice and the lack of education, the government does not take sufficient measures in spite of incitements by United Nations
bodies.
