"Surfaces" exhibition opens in Hong Kong

You're cordially invited to the opening of "Surfaces", the exhibition presented by Leap initiative Philanthropies in partnership with the Leisure Cultural Service Department (LCSD). As the guest of honor in 2017, Africa has been invited to showcase its art and culture under the World Cultures Festival theme - "Vibrant Africa".
 
"Surfaces" is a collaborative exhibition between Leap initiative Philanthropies and Po Leung Kuk Community Youth Art Development Scheme. Through this platform, four emerging artists from Zimbabwe present sculptures and a series of mixed media prints. The exhibition explores various topics and the idea of success in Africa but more specifically Zimbabwe.
 
Central to this discourse is the shift in identity and its relationship with success within local narratives. What it means to be a Zimbabwean and an African in a post-colonial era presented with various opportunities unlike generations before them.
 
Through metaphoric conversations and narratives, the sculptures are skillfully crafted with discarded or repurposed material such as leather, plastics, metal rods, bone and wire. With such materials in excess right through the African landscape.
 
These artists give us an opportunity to reflect on whether Africans can participate, create and present to the world it's unique identities and vibrant cultures. Or has globalization and capitalism continued to reinforce ideas originally brought forward through western forces. 
 
Are African youth's today cognizant of authenticity and ownership with artistic production in the contemporary arts? With ownership comes pride in one form of expression.
 
The exhibition will be opened on the 23rd October and close on the 7th of November 2017. An opening ceremony will be held on the 23rd Oct at 6pm, 54 Village Rd, Happy Valley.
