In July 1956, young Alban Liechti (21 years old) received his mission order to be sent to Algeria and "participate in law enforcement operations". Having contributed to the mobilization against the Indochina War and for the liberation of Henri Martin, Alban absolutely did not want to take part in this new colonial war. After discussion with his comrades and his family, he decided to write to the President of the Republic to notify him of his refusal. Imprisoned upon his arrival in Algeria, he was summoned before the Military Tribunal and sentenced to two years in prison for refusal to obey, on November 19, 1956. His decision was not without raising questions and discussions; with opposition, but also controversial days in the history of the fight against the war in Algeria and particularly the attitude of the French communists. Alban Liechti, whose actions served as an example to others and who was a symbol of this refusal, had never written a book to bear witness to this story.
