Film professor at the University of Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle, Nicole Brenez is a historian, theorist, film programmer and teacher, specializing in avant-garde cinema.
Former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Modern Literature, she has published several books (De la Figure en général et du Corps en particulier. L'invention figurative au cinéma, De Boeck Université, 1998 ; Une Passion critique. Abel Ferrara, le mal mais sans fleurs, Illinois University Press, 2007 ; etc.), and numerous articles. She has designed and organized a number of events and film retrospectives in France and abroad and has been the programmer of the avant-garde sessions. In 2010, she co-directed with Philippe Grandrieux the collection It May Be That Beauty has Strengthened Our Resolve: a series of cineastes' portraits).
