"Nelson Makengo denounces the precariousness and resourcefulness of the inhabitants of Kinshasa who are constantly struggling with darkness and rampant crime. His film Makengo intersects several Kinshasa fates in nocturnal resilience following the phenomenon of load shedding practiced by neighboring investors (15 million Kinshasa residents have to light themselves), while his installation of night vendor stands and his luminous puzzle draws an untamed cartography in an atmosphere that is both disturbing and exhilarating.
