SAMIR IN THE DUST is the story of the aspirations and fears of a young Algerian smuggler who transports petrol by mule from his village to the Moroccan border. Through his portrait, emerges the filmaker's ambiguous relation with this piece of territory.

In a mountainous and arid region, Samir lives off oil smuggling. He trans- ports the merchandise on the back of a mule from his Algerian village to the Moroccan border. Filmed by his uncle, Samir gradually reveals his aspirations, and his desire for a different life. He has resigned himself and seems, a little paradoxically, via a complex connection with the region where he grew up, to be imprisoned by the horizon.This portrait of Samir finds its reflection, in the negative, in that of the director Mohamed Ouzine, and his equally ambiguous, although opposing, relationship with this territory. He lives in France, and has come back to these lands to find answers, to understand where he comes from. The camera's fascination for the landscapes is met by the incomprehension of Samir, who sees in them only sand and rocks. Impressionist images draw a line between the two, leading from the shadows to the light, from the trivial to the sublime, and perhaps reveal what keeps Samir, in spite of everything, in the infiniteness of these landscapes.

Samir lebt in einer kargen Bergregion vom Ölschmuggel. Er transportiert die Ware auf dem Rücken von Maultieren von seinem algerischen Dorf zur marokkanischen Grenze. Gefilmt von seinem Onkel gibt Samir Schritt für Schritt seine Ziele, seinen Wunsch nach einem anderen Leben preis. Die Resignation hat von ihm Besitz ergriffen und, paradoxerweise - durch die komplexe Bindung an die Region, in der er gross geworden ist - scheint er vom Horizont gefangen zu sein.
Im Negativ von Samirs Porträt spiegelt sich jenes von Regisseur Mohamed Ouzine und seiner ebenfalls zwiespältigen, wenn auch entgegengesetzten, Beziehung zu diesem Gebiet. Er lebt in Frankreich und kommt in dieses Land zurück, um Antworten zu finden, um zu verstehen, woher er kommt. Die Faszi- nation der Kamera für die Landschaften trifft auf Samirs Unverständnis, der nur Sand und Felsen sieht. Durch impressionistische Bilder zeichnet sich zwischen den beiden eine Linie, die vom Schatten ins Licht führt, vom Trivialen zu erhabener Schönheit, und vielleicht auch was Samir trotz allem in der Endlosigkeit dieser Landschaften hält.
