MAMA AFRICA is a documentary about the recently deceased South African icon Miriam Makeba, who traveled with her powerful music around the world to spread her political message against racism and poverty and for equality and peace. "Mama Africa" is the homage to this extraordinary and impressive artist who incarnates the voice and the hope of Africa.

Miriam Makeba was the first black African musician who won international stardom and whose music was always anchored in her traditional South African roots. Miriam Makeba was forced into exile in 1959. She sang for John F. Kennedy, performed with Harry Belafonte and Nina Simone, was married to Hugh Masekela and also Stokely Carmichael. Her life was tumultuous. She always stood for truth and justice. She fought for the oppressed most importantly for black Africans, as a campaigner against apartheid. She died November 2008 after a concert in Italy. Mika Kaurismäki's documentary, traces fifty years of her music and her performing life. Through rare archive footage of her performances and through interviews with her contemporaries we discover the remarkable journey of Miriam Makeba.

Der Film ist eine Hommage an die im November 2008 verstorbene südafrikanische Ikone. Eine Frau, die die Hoffnung und die Stimme Afrikas verkörperte.

Mi­ri­am Ma­ke­ba war die erste afri­ka­ni­sche Künst­le­rin, die auf der gan­zen Welt Er­fol­ge fei­ern konn­te. Drei Jahre nach dem Tod der süd­afri­ka­ni­schen Mu­si­ke­rin er­zählt Mika Kau­ris­mä­ki ihre Ge­schich­te in sei­nem Do­ku­men­tar­film ?Mama Af­ri­ca?, der bei den 61. In­ter­na­tio­na­len Film­fest­spie­len Ber­lin in der Sektion Panorama Dokumente seine Weltpremiere feiert.

Mika Kaurismäkis Dokumentaressay über die weltbekannte südafrikanische Sängerin Miriam Makeba, die ein halbes Jahrhundert lang die Welt bereiste und ihre politische Botschaft gegen Rassismus, gegen Armut und für Gerechtigkeit und Frieden verbreitete, ist die Hommage an eine Frau, die wie keine andere die Hoffnung und die Stimme Afrikas verkörperte. Miriam Makeba (1932-2008) hat Musiker überall auf der Welt inspiriert und ein internationales Publikum begeistert. Gleichwohl ist sie den südafrikanischen Wurzeln ihrer Musik immer treu geblieben. Ins Exil wurde sie schon 1959 getrieben, nachdem sie in dem Apartheidkritischen Dokumentarfilm COME BACK, AFRICA mitgewirkt hatte. Harry Belafonte verhalf ihr in die USA, wo sie 1962 unter anderem bei einer Geburtstagsfeier John F. Kennedys auftrat und 1967 mit „Pata Pata"ihren ersten Welthit hatte. Als sie 1968 den Black-Panther-Aktivisten Stokely Carmichael heiratete und ins Fadenkeuz des FBI geriet, liess sie sich in Guinea nieder und setzte ihr Engagement gegen das weisse Apartheid-Regime in ihrer Heimat von dort aus fort. Den Lebensweg dieser aussergewöhnlichen Künstlerin, die mehr als 50 Jahre lang musikalisch für Furore sorgte, stellt der Film mit Hilfe von seltenen Dokumentaraufnahmen und zahlreichen Interviews dar. Freunde, Verwandte und Kollegen, die Miriam Makeba zum Teil schon seit deren Anfängen in den Dancehalls von Johannesburg kennen und schätzen, kommen dabei ebenso zu Wort wie junge Vertreterinnen der afrikanischen
Musikwelt.
