Contrariamente a la Europa de la Edad Media, donde el cuerpo estaba consagrado sobre todo a la penitencia, el Islam da a la salud, a la higiene, al vigor corporal, una legitimidad religiosa. El hospital es una invención árabe fundamental, con sus dormitorios comunes y su sistema de enfermería.
While in the Europe of the Middle Ages the body was above all a subject of penitence, for Islam, health, hygiene and physical vigour had a religious legitimacy. The hospital, with its wards and its nursing practices, is a fundamental Arab invention.
