On August 26, 2010, Shannon Walsh and 15 other Montreal filmmakers spent an entire day shooting a variety of stories in the working-class neighbourhood of Saint-Henri, as an update and homage to Hubert Aquin's 1962 film À Saint-Henri le cinq septembre. Jeppe on a Friday transplants the collaborative experiment to South Africa, in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Jeppe. Working with a team of local filmmakers, Walsh and South African co-director Arya Lalloo spent a single day filming a portrait of a community pulsing with life, visiting a diverse and surprising collection of places. The result is an astonishing work that stands as a fluid exploration of the complex and fascinating spectrum of South African society, along with some subtle keys to understanding it.
