SYNOPSIS

August 1942. Im Nordosten Brasiliens kreuzen sich die Wege des deutschen Aspirinvertreters Johann (Peter Ketnath) und des vor der Dürre flüchtenden Anhalters Ranulpho (João Miguel). Johann wirbt bei der Landbevölkerung mit Kurzfilmen für die "Wunderwirkung" von Aspirin und lässt sein staunendes Publikum so gleichzeitig auch die Magie des Kinos entdecken. Die beiden jungen Männer befreunden sich. Auf ihrer Fahrt über die staubigen Strassen des brasilianischen Hinterlandes suchen sie nach neuen Horizonten in ihrem Leben.

CINEMA, ASPIRINES & VULTURES ist der erste Langspielfilm von Marcelo Gomes. Die Idee zum Film ist seinerzeit in einem Gespräch mit seinem Grossonkel, Ranulpho Gomes, der in der Provinz Paraiba geboren ist, entstanden. Nachdem er während der vierziger Jahre zahlreiche Trockenperioden erlebt hatte, entschloss sich dieser in den Südosten des Landes zu emigrieren, auf der Suche nach einem besseren Leben.

1942. In the middle of northeast Brazil, two men meet: Johann, a German who has escaped from the war, and Ranulpho, a Brazilian leaving the drought that hunts the region. Driving from village to village, they show a film to the inhabitants who have never before experienced cinema in order to sell a brand new "miracle" medicine. Continuing to cross dusty roads in the old-fashioned hinterland, they search for new horizons in their lives.


Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures is the first full length feature by Marcelo Gomes. The director recounts that the original idea for the film came from a conversation he had with his great uncle, Ranulpho Gomes, who was born in the north-eastern state of Paraíba. After living through numerous droughts during the 40s, he decided to migrate to the south-east of Brazil, in the hope of finding a better life.
