Vreedzame demonstratie van dorpelingen, Israëli's en buitenlanders tegen de bouw van de muur, die midden door dit oude Palestijnse dorpje loopt.

Een film over hoe men de angst voor een bezettingsleger kwijtraakt, over de Palestijnse strijd om hun land te behouden en hun vrijheid op te eisen, en over een Israëlische filmmaker die de grens overschrijdt en vriendschap sluit met een Palestijns dorp. Shai Carmeli Pollak kwam niet naar Bil'in als filmmaker, maar als activist, om deel te nemen aan het protest tegen de diefstal van land als gevolg van de scheidingsmuur. Anderhalf jaar lang legde zijn camera de momenten vast van wanhoop en hoop, van gevaar en moed en van het ontstaan van echte vriendschap tussen Palestijnen en Israëli's. In die periode groeide het dorp uit tot symbool van de gezamenlijke strijd tegen de muur en de bezetting. De regisseur concentreert zich op twee hoofdpersonen: Mohammed, lid van het lokale comité tegen de muur, en Wagee, boer en vader van tien kinderen, die zijn land door de muur en de nieuwe vestigingen grotendeels kwijtraakt. De film toont de ongewone relatie tussen de dorpelingen en een groep Israëlische activisten tegen de achtergrond van hun strijd. Het conflict dat tussen Shai en de soldaten die in het gebied dienen ontstaat gaat niet alleen over een filmmaker en de mensen die hij filmt, maar ook over een ex-soldaat die nu vredesactivist is en de gehele militaire organisatie.

The village of Bil'in is about to lose over a half of its territory to the Security Barrier and to the Jewish settlement of Modi'in Elite.
The residents of the village decide to embark on a struggle
against the construction of the barrier and are joined by international and Israeli activists.

The director, Shai Carmeli-Pollak accompanies the village's
struggle for over a year, focusing on two central figures:
Mohamed, a member of the village's local committee against
the barrier, and Wagee, farmer and father of ten, who is losing the majority of his land to the barrier and to the settlement.

The film exposes the extraordinary relationship formed between the villagers and a group of Israeli activists, on the backdrop of their struggle. The conflict that arises between Shai and the soldiers serving in the area is not only between a director and the subjects that he is documenting, but also the conflict between a former soldier, turned peace activist, and the entire military organization.




Director's statement

I did not come to Bil'in as a filmmaker, but as an activist, to take part in the protest against the land theft caused by the separation barrier.
For a year and a half, I used my camera to document the moments of despair and hope, danger and courage and the birth of true partnership between Palestinians and Israelis. During this period the village has become a symbol of the joint struggle against the barrier and the occupation.
