Hajooj Kuka was born in Sudan. He currently resides between Kenya and his home country. He studied Electronic Engineering at the American University of Beirut and Digital Design in California, before taking various art classes that led to an interest in filmmaking. In 2012 Kuka returned to the Nuba Mountains as a war correspondent and began working on documentary projects. His film To the Rhythm of the Antonov won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. Kuka was listed by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the Top Global Thinkers of 2014 in the category of chroniclers. In 2018, his first feature-length fiction film, aKasha, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Kuka is also a member of Girifna, a Sudanese non-violent resistance movement. In September 2020, he was one of the artists arrested after religious militants attacked a theatre rehearsal in which he was participating. Several film industry figures called on the Sudanese government to release Kuka and the other artists.
