In Belgium, article 9ter of the Act of 15 December 1980 allows a foreigner to apply for a residence permit, if he suffers from an illness causing a real risk to his life. For many undocumented, this article is the only access to legal status. In Brussels, in March 2009, over 1,000 people decided to start a hunger strike.
