Yvonne Vera (September 19, 1964 - April 7, 2005) was an award-winning author from Zimbabwe. Her novels are known for their poetic prose, difficult subject-matter, and their strong women characters, and are firmly rooted in Zimbabwe's difficult past. For these reasons, she has been widely studied and appreciated by those studying postcolonial African literature.
Author of Why Don't you Carve other Animals, Nehanda, Without a Name, Under the Tongue, Butterfly Burning, The Stone Virgins.
Her books have won her many prizes and have been translated into many languages bringing honour to her country, Zimbabwe.
Former Director of the National Gallery in Bulawayo.
It is with great sorrow that Yvonne Vera's family and friends would like to inform you of her death. Yvonne died peacefully of meningitis in hospital in Toronto, Canada in the presence of her mother, Ericah Gwetai, and her husband John José.
She is survived by her parents Ericah and Lambert Gwetai, brother Tafadzwa and husband, John José
Yvonne Vera had been living in Canada for the last year working on her fifth novel.
She had so much to give, and had already given so much, she will be remembered for a very long time.
She will be greatly missed by many all over the world.
