During the last decade many countries in Africa have undertaken political, economic and social reforms with far-reaching implications for the long term development of the continent. So far the results of these reforms have been mixed, and as yet there has been no concensus on the outcome and impact of them. Aware of this lack of consensus the participants in the fourth Organisation for Social Science Research Congress selected political and economic transformation and socio-economic development responses in Africa as its theme for the fifth congress. The contibutions were presented under five major sub- themes: political reforms, economic reforms, the socio-economic implications of the political reforms, the socio-economic implications of the economic reforms, and development strategies for Africa in the 1990s and beyond.
