Patrick, a French engineer, returns to the village in Burkina Faso where, years ago, he had a daughter with a local woman, Kaya. He snatched the baby away from the hut of the midwife just after Kaya gave birth, but he is now returning with Martine, wanting her to experience the part of her heritage she was alienated from. Kaya, who has lost her ability to speak after the trauma of losing her child, "kidnaps" the little girl and takes her into the bush in an attempt to build a relationship with her estranged daughter. A journey of discovery begins between mother and daughter who grow to know and love each other despite the vast cultural differences between them. But Patrick is desperate to find them in a race against time, because Martine is gravely ill... This poignant tale is the debut feature of acclaimed Burkinabe director Apolline Traoré, a film which deals with issues of love, deception and redemption in an unforgettably heart-rendering way.
