At the beginning of 2012, northern Mali is occupied by a coalition of armed independence and jihadist groups who are demanding the country's separation and the imposition of Sharia law. In Gao, the historic capital of the north, resistance to these new occupants was organized around youth movements that undertook to protect their families and liberate the city.
